Puerto Rico is an island in the northeastern Caribbean, famous for its pleasant climate and natural beauty. Smallest of the Greater Antilles, Puerto Rico includes the main island of Puerto Rico and several small islands and quays including Vieques, Moona and Culebra. San Juan is its capital. Bounded by the Caribbean Sea in the south and the Atlantic Ocean in the north, the tropical island Puerto Rico features mountains, valleys, white sandy beaches, and other natural wonders that make it an ideal place to visit.
Puerto Rico was a Spanish colony for over four centuries until it came under the possession of the United States in 1898 by the Treaty of Paris, which ended the Spanish-American war. The people there were granted US citizenship in the year 1917. Puerto Rica became an autonomous part of the US, called the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico in 1952 by a new constitution.
Puerto Rican culture is a blend of four cultures including the African, Taino, Spanish and North American. One of the most densely populated islands in the world with over four million inhabitants, Puerto Rico is home to immigrants from Spain, Cuba, Latin America, Argentina, Colombia, Dominica and Venezuela. Though many religions are practiced on this island, the Roman Catholic religion is the most dominant one.
Puerto Rico has two official languages: Spanish and English. The currency of this island is the US dollar.
The main agricultural products produced in Puerto Rica include sugarcane, pineapple, coffee, plantains and bananas. The main industries are pharmaceuticals, food products, apparel, machinery and tourism.
Climate: Trade winds ensure Puerto Rico a subtropical weather year round. The island gets abundant rainfall in the highlands and along the north coast. The highland areas are a few degrees cooler than the coastal areas.
Flag: Puerto Rican flag have five red and white horizontal stripes. It also features a white star in the middle of a blue triangle on the left side.
