How To Double Your Punching Power
If you are a martial artist or just someone who is interested in combat sports you already know the importance of being able to punch hard. Even though it is not quite as important as having superior punching speed, being able to punch hard is one of the best attributes you can have in combat sports and self defense in general.
The first myth that surrounds punching and being able to punch hard is that you have to be very strong in order to punch hard. This is totally wrong and I have seen proof of this on many occasions. Now don't get me wrong, if you are a big guy and are very strong there is a very high percentage of chance that you will be able to punch hard and potentially knock out someone.
But the most important aspect of punching hard is actually your punching speed. Physics have shown that when you double the amount of your speed your power gets 4 times bigger, in comparison to doubling your weight where the power only gets two bigger.
But the most important aspect beyond speed is actually your technique. Different martial arts use different ways to generate power, but what they all have in common is that they get their power from rotating the body in the right way. Ideally you want to rotate your body in a way so that the power starts all the way from your feet, travel up to your hips where they gain additional momentum, enter your shoulder, elbow, go through your wrist and ultimately exit out of your punch to deliver an extremely powerful punch.
In the beginning it can be really hard mastering this hip rotation but the more you practice, the more times you will get it right and slowly but surely you will start differentiating between when you are punching with the right rotation and when you are not using your rotational power.
Great ways to train this is to work a lot on the punching bag and really focus on your rotations. Remember it is not about punching as hard as you can when you train, it is about punching with the correct technique and rotation. Once you start mastering the technique you can start punching harder and putting more body weight and power into your punches.
One last tip is to watch your wrists as they won't be able to handle big amounts of power in the beginning when they have not yet been conditioned.
