Ninja Weapons vs. Other Martial Arts Weapons
What is it about ninja weapons that make them much more memorable than other martial arts weapons? To answer this question is not easy. There is a wide array of different weapons that have been produced through history. Different weapons will yield completely different purposes. They will have been invented for different reasons to reflect different environments and different circumstances.
Consider the common nunchaku. These weapons do make their appearance in some of the classic ninja movies of the 1980s. However, the nunchakus are NOT ninja weapons. The nunchakus were never intended to be used as weapons at all. The original purpose was to use them as a tool to grind rice. This started many hundreds of years prior to the development of ninjitsu in China. Eventually, the nunchakus ventured to Okinawa where their weapon use was innovated.
Okinawa was, of course, the birthplace of karate. (Chinese immigrants brought crane style kung fu to Okinawa where it eventually morphed into karate) Okinawa was populated mainly by farmers. They were suppressed by Japanese nobles and, since traditional military weapons were banned, farming tools were employed for weapons use. This is how seemingly odd weapons such as the sai, the kama, and the nunchaku came into being. Well, they came into being as weapons. They had been employed as farming tools for hundreds of years prior.
With ninja weapons, there was no need to hide their use. The ninja were stealth assassins and, in some instances, mercenaries and terrorists. They had access to 'real' weapons and did not need to tweak tools for weaponry purposes. The weapons were exactly that...weapons.
But, there was an additional difference between ninja weapons and the traditional weapons of China, Japan, the Majaphit Empire, and the many weapons of Europe and Africa. The ninja were not military. Again, they were mercenaries and assassins. As such, ninja weapons embodied stealth assassination techniques. There were also notorious for their capacity for cruelty and employed rather violent tactics such as blinding and poisoning. Needless to say, the very fearful imagery of the ninja was well deserved.
This is not to say there was no science involved with ninja weapons. Pure strength and brutality was not the strategy employed in the performance of these weapons. A great deal of skill, talent, and precision was needed. Often, the ninja needed to attack the samurai. Without legitimate skill in weaponry prowess, the ninja would never survive a one on one fight with the samurai. Since history does show many ninjas were successful in sword battle against samurai, we know that the ninja did understand the fine points of swordsmanship. It is just that the ninja had no qualms about sneaking up on someone and attacking from behind....
Yes, the world of ninja weapons can be considered a unique one to examine. Perhaps that is why ninja weapons still stimulate interest even many centuries after the ninja faded away from Japanese society. Those with a unique interest in such weaponry have many options in which to further learn how to use them for hobbyists' pursuits.
