Black Belts

Steven Seagal Black Belt Test (part1)

You Need To Do Some Detective Work Before Choosing A Martial Arts School

When deciding on a martial arts training school, there are many factors that that come into play. Some investigation is in order.. Any kind of business may claim that they are the best at what they do, or they can offer you the cheapest price or best discounts, but that doesn’t always mean it’s true (or a good selling point, if you really think about it).

Businesses invest a lot of time and money into advertising because it draws people in and sells their product or service, whatever it maybe. These advertisements are meant to draw you in right away and make whatever they have seem irresistible to you while making also making you feel that they are the best company to buy it from. Advertisements can often be "creative" with the truth..

A Martian Arts advertisement might state that all the instructors are Black Belts and guarantee a belt promotion after a year.. This should cause a warning bell to go off in your head.. You should look at where the instructors trained and where they got their belts. Some schools hand out belts like candy because it makes the school appear to have a high numbered of colored belts, but in reality, the black belt students could be the skill level of purple belts. If you want to have good instruction and actually learn, you need to know where your instructors came from. At my Columbia Martial Arts center, the instructors' Brazilian Jiu Jitsu lineages is easily traceable all the way back to the founder of the style.  If you are simply looking in to martial arts to get a black belt and just walk around feeling macho, they yes, sure go to a school like this.

There is a problem with any martial arts center that promises a belt promotion based on time rather than skill.. They may say something like, train three classes a week and after a year, we will give your blue belt. The issue with this is that not everyone is the same and you should attend a school that realizes this. If people come into the program with different physical abilities, different sports experience, and different brains, how can they all be the exact same skill level after an identical period of time?!?. Training for a year doesn't prove you possess the skills of other Blue Belts; it simply indicates that you have the dedication and willpower to train regularly for a year..

Cleanliness, Student-teacher ratio, and reviews by students are three other important criteria.. The cleanliness of a school is very important because the mats which you work out need to be cleaned daily and if they aren’t properly cared for, you can get easily get skin infections such as ringworm, especially if you practice a grappling martial art. There should not be more than twenty to twenty-five students per class.. If there are more students than this, the instructor will be hard pressed to correct the mistakes made by his students..  Even better schools will have multiple instructors per single class - like they do at my Columbia MD Martial Arts School.

Finally, a good tactic to finding a good martial arts training school is to look at student review. These will offer you a good insight on what people already think of the school. Students will tell you their experience at the school and if they would recommend it to others. If there are no testimonials, it may be due to the fact that not many people are saying good things. Don't skimp on the detective work and end up at a poorly-run martial arts center.. Look at all the schools around you in your area and go into the school for a visit. Make sure to keep a discerning eye to spot the important small details that make the difference between schools.. Start narrowing the options down and before you know it you will be training at a quality school.

Frequently Asked Questions...

Are younger black belts different from older black belts?

At my school there a little kids that are probably 10 years old that are black belts. I have friend that is a junior black belt she is 12. Then their are only 10 adult that are black belt. The rest of the school is below that. Is it good to have black belts that are little kids or wait until they are older?

Answer:

There are alot of different schools of thought on this subject. I think a true black belt should be at least a young teenager with a high level of maturity. At least they have an understanding of what it means to be a martial artist by that time. I've seen so many studios with child B/Bs that cant even tie their belts properly or tell you the meaning their style. I think its a pathetic and a insult of the arts in general when that happens. While some kids may have a few skills does that really mean they understand meaning of the martial arts. With power comes responsibilty. How much responsibilty are you willing to give to a 9 or 10 year?
