My Child Doesn't Seem Into It

Young children can begin training in self defense classes in Baltimore and other locations as young as three years old. Many martial arts schools have Brazilian jiu jitsu programs for children in which children learn simple punches, kicks, take downs, guard controls, and other techniques. As the children grow older, the teachings will become more complex.. Young children are very receptive and they actually learn best when they are so young because their brains are like sponges, they soak everything up, but that doesn’t mean they will be entirely comfortable in their first few classes.

Many young children attend their first class and want to cling to their parents, which can sometimes discourage the parents and make them feel as though martial arts aren’t right for their child. This is quite untrue. If you take your child to their first self defense class and they cling to you, it is not because it’s a martial arts class, it’s because it’s something new. The reactions will differ from child to child depending on their personality, but there is no reason to feel off put and stop taking them to classes. You need to continue taking them and with every class they will feel more and more comfortable with what is going on, the other students, and the instructors.

This progression may occur slowly, but it will happen. For instance, class one might only consist of a warmup for the nervous child and class two would then consist of the warmup and maybe one game.. With each class children will feel more comfortable to take part in more and more. Parents often stress out too much about their child not performing the techniques that are taught perfectly - remember, practice will make perfect!.

Brazilian jiu jitsu is based upon many similar movements of the body, so with each class children are building a core set of movements to progress from. In addition, movements in jiu jitsu need to be drilled over and over for them to become part of muscle memory. At my Columbia MD Kickboxing school, children’s classes generally focus on about three techniques a month, and over that time span children receive lots of time to drill their moves. With realistic expectations, parents will eventually see their children progress in spite of a slow start..

What can I do from the guard position?

I'm a noob to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and I was wondering what I can do to better my position when my opponent is in my guard. I've attended two classes so far and I've learn some ways to get out from under being mounted, how to get out or submit someone when I'm in their guard, and some submissions for when I'm in mount. I have yet to learn what to do when someone else is in my guard. I would like to know any basic moves I can do to better my position and/or submit someone from this position. Thanks.

Since you've just started, I'm not going to try to relay any submissions. This is best left for your instructor. However, when you're first starting out you want to survive as long as possible and keep from getting passed. Two of the best things you can do are to control your opponent's hands, usually through the use of his or her sleeves, and control his or her posture, which can be done by grabbing the lapel. When you're on the bottom you need to control the hands of your opponent so that they can't control your hips, head, or shoulders. Keeping their posture broken down also keeps them from aligning their spine, which makes everything they do, harder. I'd suggest just working on that for right now. You're only two classes into it, you're still just learning the basics. Just try to make those basics really good. When you can keep from being passed, then you can move on to submissions and tap the guy whenever you'd like.
