Frequently Asked Questions...
What Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Uniform to buy ?
Hey guys,
I have my first lesson of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in my local city here close to melbourne in australia tomorrow and the first 2 classes are free with a free uniform.
Now they have the cotton ones which you get for free, they said if you like i can get a judo uniform to use for $23US extra
The kimono's are pretty dear to buy for me as i am only starting out so what should i get just the standard cotton uniform or go the judo or fork the money out for a kimono ?
Also if i did decide to get the kimono can i get black or does it have to be white ? or is black reserved for instructors etc ?
Cheers

Jitsu Kimono
Gameness Pearl Jiu Jitsu Gi / Kimono - Product Overview
Start Training In Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with the Kimono (Gi) or No Gi
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with Kimono (also known as a Gi)
Having a nice Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Kimono (or Gi) makes training so much more enjoyable. Wearing your Karate or Judo Gi to train in Jiu Jitsu just isn't the same. These Gi's are not made for the sport and will probably end up tearing; not to mention, they are not very comfortable for this type of training. The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Kimono or Gi comes in so many different styles and designs, so finding one that you like won't be a problem. Choose a Gi that has the color and style you want and find one that fits properly. Many tournaments have rules for how your BJJ Gi needs to fit, so if you're planning on using your Gi in a tournament, make sure it meets these requirements. The sizings are all pretty much the same and go by height and the sizing chart is listed on the sites.
Start off with one Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Kimono to use in training. Just make sure that you wash it regularly and hang it up in a good ventilated area to dry. Jiu Jitsu Gi's have a tendency to shrink a lot in the dryer, so always hang your Gi up to dry. In summer months, outside is always best unless it is humid. It takes at least a full day for it to dry completely, so if you start training more than 2 days a week, eventually you will need to purchase another one. Now you can buy the same Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Kimono you already have, if you really like it, or you can try out another one. It's always nice to have a few different ones. It's kind of like having a few different outfits instead of wearing the same old thing all the time. If you buy more than one Gi, they will last you longer but also, you will be hygienically cleaner. There can be a lot of germs and bacteria in the gym; you want to make sure you stay clean as possible.
And that is pretty much it. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a simple sport. You do not need too much to get started; just a Gi and a training partner, and you're set. With that being said, have fun and train hard.
BJJ-No Gi
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is one of those sports that has two elements to it; Gi and No Gi. No Gi emerged when BJJ practitioners ventured into Mixed Martial Arts. They didn't want to wear the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Kimono, so they put on their tights and scared off all the fans! Thankfully, a few years later we all adopted the surf shorts, which are now known as MMA fight shorts.
MMA Fight shorts are pretty basic to buy. There are so many online MMA stores, you can find all of the jiu jitsu clothing you are looking for and they are all priced relatively the same. Go online and find a pair of MMA fight shorts you really like and start training.
Once MMA became more popular, more jiu jitsu clothing became available, and fighters began to train in rashguards which are tight shirts. This is to keep the other persons sweat off of you, not to mention the dirt from the gym. And just like the fight shorts, rashguards are very simple to buy. Just find one you really like and go ahead and grab them. All you have to decide is if you like short sleeve or long sleeve.
Another thing to consider is how much jiu jitsu clothing you'll need. If you are training a couple times a week, you do not need too many outfits. If you are a gym rat, you may want to have lots of jiu jitsu clothing. The last thing you want to do is wear the same unwashed sweaty clothes over and over again. If you need lots of jiu jitsu clothing, but you cannot afford to buy that much, there is another solution. Go to a sporting goods store or any store where you can find surf shorts and tight workout tops. They are usually cheaper than fight apparel, except they are not nearly as stylish and comfortable. Most fighters have some name brand clothing that they really like and compensate the rest with cheaper apparel.
Be sure that you get enough jiu jitsu clothing so it will last you until the next wash cycle, and you're not doing laundry every day. And buy stuff you will enjoy wearing, so training becomes much more enjoyable.
