Test your wine tolerance at the Feast of the Drunken Dragon

Almost all Chinese festivals involve some unusual sort of revelry and are full of colour and music. Of these, perhaps what can be termed the strangest of them all is a festival celebrated mainly by the inhabitants of Macau. This is the Feast of the Drunken Dragon.

Many legends and folk tales give different twists to the tale that marks the establishment of the Festival. During the ancient Qing dynasty, the Kangxi Kingdom was struck by a plague that was wiping out many of the villages. The villagers then led a procession, bearing the statue of the Buddha, around the Kingdom praying for deliverance from the plague. As the procession was going alongside a river, a giant python emerged from the water onto the bank and blocked the path of the procession. A Buddhist Monk then leapt to the aid of the people and slashed the python into three pieces and threw them back into the water. After writhing around on the banks and in the water the giant python pieces vanished into the sky amidst a loud clap of thunder and gush of wind. Following this incident the plague miraculously disappeared from the Kingdom leading the people to believe that the python was a dragon sent down from heaven to save them. The fact that the soil along the bank where the creature's blood had splattered, proved to be extremely fertile, was an added sign that the dragon was a divine intervention.

Since then, each year on the 8th day of the fourth lunar month, the Fishermen's association organize a parade where men cut out wooden images of the dragon and prop them on wooden stilts and carry them around dancing drunkenly from market to market alongside the harbour. At each different location the men drink wine until they can't take another drop. The merrymaking ends with a gala dinner at the end of the day.
