Loony Laser Dazzlers Putting Passengers at Risk
The British Pilots Union (BALPA) have warned that it is only a matter of time before a serious incident occurs and lives are lost.
In the UK there has been an increase in the number of reported incidents in which co-pilots have had to take the aircraft controls after the pilot was temporarily blinded by lasers. Only recently there have been a number of what could have become fatal incidents at Edinburgh, Glasgow, Durham and Gatwick airports.
Often it s difficult to pinpoint the source of a laser pointer due to the height of an aircraft. In one recent incident at Durham Tees airport the police were able to locate and capture the man responsible.
The cheap laser devices, imported primarily from China, can produce intense beams that will reach as far as 37,000 feet. Pilots have warned taht the unusual lights encountered when coming in to land can force them to take evasive action. They have warned that it is only a matter of time before a disaster takes place.
In the United States there have been over 1000 incidents of lasers used to dazzle pilots over the past five years. Those convicted can face a prison sentence of up to 20 years and a fine for as much as $25,000. In America they are considering treating those convicted of this crime as domestic terrorists.
In a couple of recent court cases in the UK one man from Hampshire was given a suspended sentence and in another a 19 year old man was awarded a 4 month prison sentence. Air safety campaigners in the U.K. have said that these sentences are nowhere near harsh enougn.
